Studebaker produced 1,548 V8-powered examples of the Gran Turismo Hawk for 1964, 70 of which are said to have been equipped with the R2 supercharged engine. This car is reportedly the only example for the model year that was equipped with the R2 engine and finished from the factory in Horizon Green. It was repainted under previous ownership and refinished again in its current shade of green under current ownership following a fender repair. The seller states that additional work included replating and polishing the chrome and stainless-steel trim and also replacing the rubber seals. Exterior details include tinted glass, a left-side mirror, quarter vent windows, Gran Turismo door badges, and dual exhaust outlets.
White-painted 15″ steel wheels feature bright covers and are mounted with 215/75 Hankook Optimo H724 whitewall tires that show 2018 production date codes. The car is equipped with power steering and rear traction and stabilizer bars, and braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums. The seller reports that the suspension and the brakes were overhauled under current ownership.
The cabin houses low-back front bucket seats and a rear bench that are said to have been reupholstered in green vinyl with patterned cloth inserts under current ownership. The carpets were also replaced, and color-coordinated door panels are complemented by woodgrain trim on the dashboard and on the door and side panels. Additional appointments include front lap belts, a heater, front and rear center armrests, a locking glovebox, and a rebuilt push-button AM/FM radio.
The two-spoke steering wheel features a half horn ring and fronts a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 5k-rpm redline, a rebuilt analog clock, and gauges for coolant temperature, fuel level, amperage, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 57k miles, approximately 500 of which were added under current ownership.
The 289ci V8 is topped by a Paxton supercharger, a four-barrel carburetor, and chrome valve covers. The car is equipped with a heavy-duty alternator, and the engine is said to have been refreshed with replacement rings and gaskets under current ownership.
The engine stamping pictured above reads JTSH316.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission and a Dana 44 rear axle with a 3.54:1 ratio. The seller reports that the transmission and differential seals were replaced under current ownership along with the exhaust system.
